License Business Rules

This section outlines the business rules that govern how different licenses operate within the Publica.la ecosystem, including revenue models, reporting capabilities, and operational constraints.

Owner License

  • Revenue Model: Full control over content pricing and distribution
  • Reporting: Complete access to all sales data for owned content
  • Content Control: Full editing rights for all metadata and content files
  • Distribution Rights: Can share content with other tenants or through marketplace

Retail License

  • Revenue Model: Direct sales.
  • Distribution Options: Individual sales. Owners are able to make the content available in the marketplace, so that other tenants can sell it.
  • Restrictions:
    • Core Metadata is only editable by the content owner.
    • Cannot be distributed as loans.
    • Cannot be distributed as part of a plan.
    • Cannot be manually assigned to a user or plan.
    • Original content files cannot be downloaded.

Manual Assignment Exception

Temporary Exception

Some bookshops have been granted a temporary exception that allows them to manually assign retail content to users and include it in plans. This is a monitored exception while a proper feature is being developed.

Whitelisted Tenants can:

  • Manually assign retail content to individual users
  • Include retail content in subscription plans
  • Perform bulk assignments of retail content

This exception is managed through an internal whitelist and requires special approval. For technical implementation details, see the engineering documentation.

Share License

When content is shared between tenants using the Share license, specific business rules apply to ensure proper content management and financial operations.

For Content Owners

  • No fees apply to sales made with shared content by other tenants
  • Cannot access sales information for their content in other stores
  • Retain exclusive rights to the original content files
  • Can revoke sharing permissions at any time

For Content Recipients

  • Standard contract fees apply to all sales
  • Can include shared content in their own plans and collections
  • Can modify keywords and collections for better integration
  • Cannot download or modify the original content files

Reporting Limitations

  • Tenants receiving shared content see standard sales reports for their store
  • Content owners cannot access sales information for their shared content in other stores
  • No automated revenue sharing between content owner and selling tenant
info

Content owners seeking sales information have alternative options:

  • Use the Marketplace for content distribution with sales reporting
  • Set up aggregated stores to access complete reports across multiple stores
